Reading Eggs: On-line Learning Program Review

What Is Reading Eggs?
Reading Eggs is an on-line reading program for children ages 3-7 and includes Reading Eggspress for ages 7-13.

What We Reviewed
We reviewed the Reading Eggs portion of this program which is geared towards ages 3-7.
You can check out a sample lesson here or you can sign up for a free 14 day trial here.

What We Thought
To be honest, this program really wasn't a good fit for our family. After the first couple of times, our oldest (age 6 1/2) was not interested in using the program anymore. He did not enjoy it.

This may have been because he was getting bored because numerous times he would have to repeat the same activity three times in a row (just with the word order switched up a bit)! This was even though he got them all right the 1st time. That was frustrating for both of us.

I understand they are trying to reinforce new words and perhaps a younger child would enjoy it more. However, when using it with our daughter (age 4 1/2) we both thought some of the activities were a little odd.

Also, I found the program somewhat difficult to "navigate". Sometimes it would seem to load, but then there wasn't any sound and then it would finally come.

I thought perhaps our son should move to the Reading Eggspress level and maybe he would enjoy that more. However, both times I tried to use that aspect of the program I couldn't get the volume to work (no sound). Other sites (including Reading Eggs) had sound so I know it wasn't our speakers.

On a Positive Note

This program is reasonably priced at $9.95 per month, but there are several options available so be sure to check them out here. Feel free to stop by their website to gather more information.

"The program has been developed by a highly experienced team of educational teachers, writers and developers. The Reading Eggs program focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success. It completely supports what children learn at school and will help to improve your child’s results at school." source

Perhaps other TOS reviewers had more success with their kids so please click on the link here to see what they thought. I know some of them said their children were really enjoying it. I guess it just wasn't a good fit for us!

*Disclosure:  As a part of the TOS crew, I was given a free subscription to Reading Eggs in exchange for a candid review.
