I'm seeing a shift in our culture towards living a more natural lifestyle and I think it's great! More and more people are concerned about what they put on their bodies as well as in them. If you're on a journey towards a wellness lifestyle, then clean water really needs to be at the top of your list. Our family has found that having a Berkey Filter is an excellent choice for clean water. It's a gift that we don't take lightly and we've been able to enjoy Berkey filtered water for the past 7 years now.

How I Healed My Son's Cavities

For the past two years I think the most popular question I have gotten is, "How did you heal your son's cavities?" My husband suggested I finally just put it in the form of a blog post so that it would be easier for people to find. 😏

Monday

Tick Slayer Spray

I recently partnered with Aroma Foundry to bring you a review of their essential oil product line. After looking over the essential oils to choose from, I settled on the following oils: Citronella, Cedarwood, Mandarin, Tangerine and Fir. When I chose these oils, I wasn't thinking of anything in particular that I would use them for with the exception of the Citronella. I thought that one would be great to use in a beeswax candle or in my bug spray. The rest I chose because they were all scents that I hadn't used before.

However, a few weeks after I received my oils we found out that ticks were in our area. This was something that we NEVER had to deal with before and I've lived in the same area my entire life.

Homemade Disinfecting Spray

*Affiliate links, including those from Amazon.com,  may be present in any of my posts. You can read my policy in more detail at the bottom of this post.

I've been making my own homemade kitchen disinfecting spray for the past six years. I love that it is safe to use around my kids and that it is very cost-effective as well.  Here's how I make mine:

All-Purpose Disinfectant Cleaner

enough vinegar to almost fill the bottle
2-3 tablespoons liquid castile soap

20 drops tea tree oil
(optional) 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil (or essential oil of choice)

Put all of your ingredients in a spray bottle. You can use a glass one (I like this one) or you can use an old one from the store that you have thoroughly washed out.

I use this disinfectant spray all the time and love that is safe to use around my family. I use it on tables, high chairs and counters and even to clean our stove top. And, I use this same recipe without the castile soap to clean the bathrooms. Cleaners tend to be expensive and if you want natural ones, they're even more expensive. This is a much better alternative that is also easy on the budget.

How to Make Your Own Liquid Foundation

Since Juice Plus+ transformed my skin and made it smoother than it's been in years (and free of 99.9% of my acne!) I barely use any foundation anymore.

The Oil Cleansing Method for Acne

I hate to admit it, but I've had problematic skin for all of my adult life. In fact, my skin got worse in my 20's and 30's than it ever did in my teenage years. What's up with that?

I've tried so many different things for my skin and none of them ever truly resolved my blemish prone tendencies. Not to mention, some of them also created other issues like dry skin and wrinkles in addition to not dealing with my acne.

To be honest, acne is not something I really like to talk about because while there are waaaaayyyy bigger things in life, having acne is painful and quite frankly, embarrassing.

How We Treat Ear Infections without Antibiotics

*Affiliate links, including those from Amazon.com, may be present in any of my posts. You can read my policy in more detail at the bottom of this post.

Ear infections were something that our boys struggled with a lot when they were younger. In fact, one of our boys got his first ear infection at 2 months of age and the pediatrician warned us then that children who start getting them that young often end up with tubes in their ears.

That was not what I wanted to hear and after our youngest continued to get repeated infections (and inevitably ending up on antibiotics each time) I began to look for some alternative methods for prevention and treatment.

Elderberry Syrup

It's time to bring out the elderberry syrup! This is something we have used off and on in our family over the past couple of years and honestly, I go back and forth between buying it and making our own.

This past week I opted to make our own since I already had the dried elderberries on hand.

Not familiar with elderberry syrup? That's okay! At one point I wasn't either, but I have since come to appreciate the immense benefits that this syrup offers.

Elderberry Syrup is antiviral, high in flavonoids and antioxidants and contains high levels of A, B, and C vitamins making it a great immunity booster that has been proven to shorten the duration of colds and flu.

In fact, "numerous scientific studies have investigated the use of elderberry as a treatment for flu, and all have demonstrated efficacy similar to Tamiflu and Relenza." source

Why is Elderberry Syrup Effective?

According to "Smart Medicine for Healthier Living" elderberry syrup reduced both the severity of flu symptoms and also the duration of flu from 2-3 days versus 6 days. "This is because elderberry inhibits neuraminidase, the enzyme used by the virus to spread infection to host cells." source

Also, elderberry syrup contains 3 different flavonoids. Did you know that flavonoids are effective against at least 8 different strains of the flu virus?!

Here's what else it does:
  • Helps boost the immune system
  • It stops the production of hormone-like cytokines that cause inflammation
  • Studies have also shown that elderberry reduces excessive sinus mucus secretion, and some even suggest that elderberry can help lessen swelling of mucous membranes, improve sinus drainage, and decrease nasal congestion source: http://www.naturalfertilityandwellness.com/how-to-make-elderberry-syrup/

Elderberry Syrup is Beneficial for Nursing Mothers

"After taking elderberry, a nursing mother can expect a recovery from flu symptoms within the time frame typically applied to adults who have taken Tamiflu or Relenza. Elderberry possesses powerful antiviral action and can reduce the duration of flu symptoms by 2-3 days. Additionally, elderberry is anti-inflammatory and may help to reduce fever and aches associated with flu."  source

AND, if you happen to be nursing a baby I have read that if you take the syrup 5 minutes before you nurse, the baby can receive the benefits too!

Here's How We Make Ours

1/2 c. dried elderberries (or 1 1/2 c. fresh)
1-2 sticks of cinnamon
3-5 cloves
1 T freshly grated ginger (although this last time I did the equivalent of ground ginger because that's what I had and I think the kids preferred it this way)
2 c. filtered water (3 c. if using fresh)
1 c. honey (raw if you have it)

Add dried elderberries, cinnamon stick, ginger, cloves and water to your pot. Cover and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and allow to simmer for about 20-30 minutes.

Take simmered berries and strain the juice into a bowl. (I mash mine down with a spoon to get all the extra juice!)

Add 1 cup of honey and stir.

Store in the refrigerator for up to a couple of weeks. Makes 1 pint.

The standard dose is 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp for kids and 1/2 Tbsp to 1 Tbsp for adults. If you come down with a cold or the flu, take the recommended dose every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until you feel better.

We also get the benefits of elderberry every day in our Juice Plus+ capsules and gummies which is great for prevention as well as treatment.

The Facts About Fevers

It's cold and flu season for us right now so I thought it would be a good time to address some facts about fevers and how fevers are actually one of God's natural remedies for treating illness.

But first, let me give you a little background about where I have come from when it came to illness in general and fevers in particular with our children.

I have made several changes in the past 12 years of motherhood and one of them is this: I don't make an appointment for my child at the pediatrician's as soon as they have a fever or earache. Yes, that was me. The minute I thought my son had an ear infection, I was scheduling an appointment and giving him fever reducer to help "manage the fever."

But as I have grown in my understanding about fevers and illness in general, I am finding that it's usually fine (and best) to just let the body get to work on its own the way God intended it to.

That doesn't mean that I don't help it out with natural alternatives and a lot of love and attention. For example, curious as to what I do for ear infections? You can read more here.

Letting fevers aid the body in fighting illness wasn't something I really understood until a few years ago after talking with our chiropractors when our children were sick one time. I didn't realize that letting a fever "do it's thing" would actually help cook off the bad bacteria and help our children beat the illness faster than if I gave them fever reducers.

I also understand that some of you Mommas out there have seen your child experience a febrile seizure and can certainly understand your fear of letting a fever ride so I'll give you some alternatives to reduce fevers rather than the OTC ones that are available (and also why you may want to reconsider giving them).

But First, Let's Talk About How Fevers are Beneficial

"...our body's first line of defense when invaded by any microbe, virus or bacteria are cells called microphages; a strong, healthy immune system may be able to eliminate the problem with this first step alone. If these fail to contain the microbe/"bug," then the body creates other pryogens and proteins to try to assist. Once these have been created, the hypothalamus in the brain recognizes there is an invader and raises the body temperature to assist in killing it off. This elevated temperature will generally be just a couple of degrees, but the hypothalamus determines, based on the number of pryogens and proteins, what will be necessary to eliminate the microbe/bug. If the hypothalamus creates additional biochemicals to try to protect the body, then the temperature rises accordingly."

So, when a virus is introduced into our body, a fever comes into play sometimes when the microphage cells can't beat the invader. The fever kicks it up a notch when trying to rid the unwelcome house guest.

There is a bit of a misnomer in that people think a fever is an illness.  Rather, it is a symptom that something's trying to invade the immune system and it is actually a good sign that the body is going to work in fighting an infection.

In her article, The Facts About Fevers Claudia Anrig, DC gives us some information about levels of fevers:

"A true low-grade fever is anything between 100 degrees F and 102.2 degrees F. This level of fever is beneficial; with most microbes/"bugs" that a child will be exposed to, this fever will assist the body in repelling the invader."

"A moderate-grade fever is typically between 102.2 degrees F and 104.5 degrees F. This temperature is still considered beneficial; if a child's body has reached this temperature, it's what's needed to kill whatever bacteria or virus their body is attempting fight."

"A high fever is a fever greater than 104.5. This fever may cause the child some discomfort and result in a bit of crankiness. Generally indicative of a bacterial infection, this fever means that the body is fighting something a little more serious than the common cold. While it will not cause brain damage...it is wise to seek assistance from their medical provider."

Dr. Robert Mendelsohn says  in his book, How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor, “There is a common misconception that the height of body temperature is an indication of the severity of an illness….Research has shown that more than half of all parents consider a fever high at levels between 100-102. And almost all believe it is high if it reaches 103 degrees. These parents are also convinced that the height of a fever indicates how sick their child is. This emphatically is not the case. Knowing the level of your child’s fever will tell you nothing of how sick he is or if the fever is produced by a viral or bacterial infection. There’s nothing to be gained by measuring its climb and by doing so will only magnify your fears and upset the child. Even a temperature of 105 need not be a cause of concern.”

Lastly, Dr. Sears is quoted on his site regarding normal childhood illnesses as saying, “Fevers are not serious. Many parents have a misconception that fevers are a bad thing and a sign that there is some serious underlying illness. This simply is not true. Fever is a normal and healthy response of the body to an illness. The body’s immune system releases chemicals that raise the body temperature. This is part of the normal infection-fighting process.”

What If My Child is Miserable From a Fever?

I, like you, absolutely hate to see my sweet babes suffer or in agony. But, based on what I have learned, I don't want to solve a temporary problem (a fever) only to create a long-term affect. (I'll talk more about long term affects of OTC fever reducers in a moment). That being said, our children get a lot of extra love and care when they are sick. Several of our children at one point or another have even been known to say "I wish I had a fever!" because they love the extra healthy goodies and attention they get during that time.

So, here's what I do.

How to Make Your Own Baby Wipes with Essential Oils

Making our own baby wipes is easy and cost effective. Plus, by making your own, you know exactly what ingredients are going into them in case you have a baby with sensitive skin. Thankfully that is not the case with Baby #4. However, I do like to make our own wipes mostly because they're easier on the budget than store bought wipes.

I like to add Lavender essential oil to our wipes for several reasons. It makes them smell good, it has a calming affect on both mom and baby and Lavender is antifungal among other things.

What to Do:

To make your own baby wipes, you will need to cut a roll of paper towel in half and then remove the cardboard tube. I use a plastic Sterilite container to keep ours in and while it will hold a whole role of paper towel I have found that the center of the rolls start to go moldy before I can use them all up. So, I stick to making only a half a roll at a time.

You will need:

2 c. water
2 T. baby shampoo
2 T. baby lotion
5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

Boil 2 c. water. Pour into your wipes container. Add baby lotion, shampoo and essential oil. Whisk together. Add paper towel roll. Roll around to absorb water. Done and easy and smells great too!

If your baby is struggling with a diaper rash, the Lavender should help, but you can also add a few drops of Melaluca to some fractionated coconut oil and apply. Myrrh is also a great oil to have on hand and can be added to the above mixture as well. Myrrh acts as a liquid Band-Aid and helps get rid of fungal infections in addition to helping chapped, cracked and inflamed skin.

So, that's how we make our baby wipes!
