Anna Naturals: Nursing Mama Tea {Review and Discount Code}

I've done a few reviews in the past for Drink Mamatea but they recently rebranded to Anna Naturals to expand their product line to include not only some new teas (one for energy and one to help with sleep), but also prenatal vitamin drink mixes (no more horse pills!), and some all natural bar soaps, hand washes and lotions. They'll still have their teas for preconception, pregnancy (including morning sickness), postpartum and nursing. All of Anna Naturals teas are hand-blended and made only from certified organic and all natural herbs. Every "ingredient comes from a source that does not irradiate any products and uses strict testing procedures to ensure that no product is altered in any way."

But let me tell you about the Nursing MamateaIt is the perfect blend of fenugreek seed (a definite milk supply booster!), rooibos (a caffeine free tea) and fruit to create a fenugreek tea that is not only beneficial for breastfeeding mamas, but also tastes and smells great.

"Fenugreek works because it stimulates sweat glands, and the milk ducts actually operate and function the same as sweat glands - thus fenugreek helps increase milk production. Most women will experience results within 24-72 hours of starting to drink New Mama fenugreek tea." And yes, I did! I couldn't believe how fast this tea worked. I have to be careful not to drink too much of it because I have never struggled with insufficient milk supply. I think I like the taste of this one the best though overall!

Nursing Mamatea is made in the USA and can be purchased either loose leaf or in a bag. If you purchase the loose leaf tea, you will receive one tin which contains 2 ounces of loose leaf tea and a 2" steeping ball. One tin will make about 30 cups of tea. Purposeful Homemaking readers can use the code 15offpurposeful to receive 15% off their purchase. This coupon code is valid until October 21, 2013.

Mastitix: Midwife Approved Mastitis Support {Review}

One of my favorite companies for helping our family deal naturally with health issues in life is Trilight Health. Today I'd like to tell you about a couple of their products. While this review is specifically for Nursing Mamas to tell you about Mastitix, I can't help but mention their Echinacea and Thyme with Elderberries formula as well because New Mamas are probably worn down more than anyone else I know.

The Echinacea and Thyme is my absolute FAVORITE product from them and is an Immune System Booster/Builder that also helps with Cold and Flu Relief. When I am feeling run down (which happens a lot these days!) or like I might be coming down with something, I start taking this and it works amazingly well!

But as part of my "Life After Baby" series I specifically want to tell you about Mastitix, a Midwife approved support during Mastitis. Mastitis is an infection that can occur while nursing your baby. You don't need to worry about passing this infection on to your baby during nursing because the only one it affects is you, the mom. Mastitis can be a really nasty infection that can come on extremely fast and absolutely must be dealt with immediately. Thankfully, Shonda Parker, CCE, Clinical Herbalist, Author, Lecturer, and CHANA President developed Mastitix to help a Momma when she senses she might be dealing with Mastitis.

Signs of Mastitis are: achy feeling (like you have the flu), a fever, pain and a red, hot spot on that side, pain while nursing. It is imperative that you continue to nurse on that side and it's best to start on that side each time until the mastitis is gone.

You might have guessed that I am not a big fan of antibiotics but there are some things that I will take them for and Mastitis is one of them. However, since I try to avoid antibiotics and yet don't want to end up with full blown Mastitis, I am incredibly happy to have found Mastitix from Trilight Health.

Now, if I even think I might be getting a plugged duct or mastitis I start taking Mastitix to help ward off an infection. Why am I so vigilant about it? Because I've had it about 10-12 times in my life while nursing our last 3 children. Honestly, it's one of the most miserable things I've ever experienced and you probably think I'm crazy for continuing to have nursed our babies after that but I knew it was worth it so I got through it each time. (Not to mention that the worst thing to do while you have Mastitis is to quit nursing.
Now that I have discovered Mastitix I hope to successfully prevent myself from getting Mastitis with this baby.

Tips to help treat Mastitis: If you feel yourself starting to get a plugged duct, the best thing to do is massage it gently with a bar of soap in a hot shower, drink a lot of water, nurse every 2 hours at least and start on the affected side and of course, take Mastitix. It is also very important to get rest during this time. I know how difficult that can be with a baby and other children so hopefully you can find someone to help you while you recover.

It's good to have Mastitix on hand before you get a plugged duct or Mastitis because you need to start treating it immediately. Mastitix is best used every 2 hours during acute infection but it can be taken daily as a preventative measure (although you would probably only need to take it once a day.) Click here to order yours today.

Thanks for reading this review. I hope you found it helpful and informative.

Drink Mama Tea: New Mama Tea {Review and Discount Code}

I am a huge tea drinker. I drink it nearly every day. There is something about it that helps me relax even in the midst of the craziness of motherhood. Now, I can't guarantee that it's always going to be hot when I get around to drinking it, but still, it's something I enjoy.

But, if you're a new mama, then you might like to try the New Mama Tea from Drink Mama Tea. This tea is hand blended with Lady's Mantel to help with after labor and delivery. I made sure to drink all of mine and I loved the flavor of it with some raw honey mixed in.

This tea helps with healing after birth, in part, because of the lady's mantle, which has amazing healing properties. Lady's Mantle has long been known for its aid in healing damaged tissues. It may also help with perforated eardrums, hernias, and varicosities. The benefits of lady's mantle after birth can be excellent considering it will help with healing and toning damaged tissues.

New Mama postpartum tea also contains alfalfa which is very rich in Vitamin K. Vitamin K helps aid in blood clotting which may reduce your chance of postpartum hemorrhage. Nettles are also high in Vitamin K, as well as calcium, which can help with postpartum depression, muscle aches in the abdomen and legs. It's a good idea to increase your calcium intake after pregnancy and especially if you're nursing.
This tea also contains dandelion, strawberries, cherries and cranberries in addition to the above mentioned ingredients.

New Mama tea is made in the USA and can be purchased either loose leaf or in a bag. With each purchase you will receive one tin which contains 2 ounces of loose leaf tea and comes with a 2" steeping ball. One tin will make about 30 cups of tea. Purposeful Homemaking readers can use the code purposeful13 to receive 15% off their purchase.

Our Newest Little Treasure: Caden Michael

He's finally here! We're so thankful for the safe arrival of our new son, Caden Michael. I'll tell you briefly the birth story and then share some pictures of him. :)

My due date was Sunday, July 7 but I was praying I'd go into labor over the holiday because my husband would have more time with us that way (he didn't have much vacation time at all). Thankfully the Lord answered that prayer (and many others!)

Here's the Story...

I had been having contractions off an on for a week or so before I actually went into labor so when they started again in the early evening on the 4th of July I didn't  think too much about it. We had just gotten to my parents' house for a 4th of July picnic with the family when the first contraction started. It was nothing major so I enjoyed dinner with the family. However, the contractions kept coming, but they were irregular. I kept thinking this would be the perfect night to go into labor because our kids were already having a camp out in my parents' backyard.

Around 8:30 p.m. after 3 hours of contractions, I figured it might be a good idea to head home and get our stuff together so that we'd be ready to go. Since my contractions were still irregular I decided to stick it out at home awhile longer. Besides I was really hungry. Might as well make a date night out of this since the kids were gone, right? My husband, Adam, headed to Taco Bell to get me a bean burrito (I know, you're probably wondering what in the world was I thinking???) and then picked up some peanut butter cups (our child with the peanut allergy was gone so I might as well enjoy some while I could, right??) and some Izzie's to drink. Don't worry, it wasn't too long after I ate all that that I was wondering, "What was I thinking???" Thankfully, there wasn't a bad end to the late night snacking and come 3 in the morning when I was famished and not allowed to eat I was really thankful I had eaten!

Anyways, before things got too serious we continued to watch T.V but around 11 I couldn't focus on anything but contractions anymore so I told my husband it was time to go even though the contractions were still irregular and not 5 minutes apart. My husband said we needed gas in the car (really?) so he went for that while I just timed my contractions at home. However, in the time he was gone, my contractions started to be 2, 3 and 4 minutes apart. Unfortunately, my husband forgot his cell phone so I couldn't call him AND the local fireworks display had just finished so all of the traffic was letting out at the same time he was trying to get back home to me.

It seemed like forever until he showed up and in the mean time, I got all of our stuff out on the porch so that we could go as soon as he got home. He finally pulled into the driveway and we were on our way to the hospital!

It was supposed to be a quick labor (ha ha!) but I ended up laboring through the night and FINALLY after 14 hours at 9:28 a.m. on July 5, Caden Michael entered the world and we've been in love ever since.

I hope you enjoy the pictures of our little love.

Having a Baby? What to Pack for the Hospital

Written by Kim, Contributing Writer

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I had this terrible dream where I was in labor, we went to the hospital, had a normal delivery and then I’m in my recovery room and have NOTHING…no pajamas, no soap, no toothbrush…nothing. When I awoke that morning, I immediately went out, got my supplies and packed my hospital bag. I was 20 weeks pregnant.
Okay, so I probably jumped the gun a bit, but believe it or not, many soon-to-be mamas are so preoccupied with everything else going on that they tend to neglect the all-important hospital bag.

So here’s a little cheat sheet on what you should include in your hospital bag, broken down by level of necessity:
Gotta Have It:
  • At least three pairs of warm, comfy socks
  • Any toiletries that you normally use at home like soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.
  • A few elastics or hairbands for your hair if it’s long enough
  • Glasses (if you wear them)
  • A sweatshirt or robe
  • A nursing bra
  • Nursing pads (you’re going to want the protection whether or not you plan on breastfeeding)
  • A pillow (yes, the hospital has pillows, but when it comes to comfort I prefer my own!)
  • Cell phone and cell phone charger
  • Camera with extra batteries and lots of film or a large memory card
  • Maternity or roomy clothes to go home in
  • Change of clothes for your partner
  • Basic toiletries for your partner
  • Insurance information, picture ID and any hospital forms

Would Be Nice if You Had:
  • Your own towel and washcloth
  • Makeup and hairdryer
  • Sanitary pads (the hospital provides them, but you may want your own brand)
  • A book, magazine or laptop
  • Maternity underwear (the hospital’s are disposable and kind of uncomfortable, so if you are okay with them getting ruined, I’d bring your own)
  • Breast pump if you plan on breastfeeding

Don’t Forget the Baby:
  • Take with you an outfit to bring them home in (include a jacket and hat if it is cold out) and a new blanket if you prefer
  • Have your carseat properly installed and ready to go (many hospitals will check to make sure the seat is installed properly before you leave. You can also go to any local firestation and they provide free carseat installation and checks.)
  • Remember, take a little time, get your items together and pack your bag at least a few weeks before you due date, since you never know exactly when your baby will arrive. I also recommend packing two bags and having one in the house and one in a car (just in case you are out when the big moment arrives).  Congratulations, and good luck!

Unbound Birth: How to Have a Natural Birth in the Hospital

When I came across the book Unbound Birth: How to Have a Natural Birth in the Hospital I knew it was a book I definitely wanted to read. With our other pregnancies there were certain things I didn't even know I had options about since I was giving birth in a hospital and I just went with the protocol.

If you desire a more natural birthing experience but aren't ready to do it at home, then Unbound Birth would be a good read for you. It gives helpful advice and is written with an excellent tone. And by that I mean, it is not obnoxious, off the wall, extreme or in your face in any way.

Jenny did a fantastic job giving her readers helpful information in a respectable manner as she shares her birth experiences and also covers topics such as natural birth, doulas (what they are and why they are helpful), how to help through the pain of labor, diet and excercise.

In the United States at least, women have the option of choosing home births, birthing centers or hospital births. I'm thankful we have these options and that we have the freedom to choose which one is right for us. Personally, I prefer to have our babies in a hospital setting for several reasons but I certainly don't condemn anyone for having a home birth or choosing a birthing center. In fact, if there were a birthing center near by I might choose that.

Regardless of where you choose to give birth (should you get the option of choosing--as in, you don't have to give birth in your car!!) you do have certain options that should be made available to you.

Now, I don't plan on bucking the system by any means with this birth and I am extremely grateful for the awesome doctors and nurses I have had with our previous births. However, there are a few things I'd like to do differently this time around and that involves writing up a Birth Plan to have with me for this delivery.

In Unbound Birth Jenny gives an excellent example of a birth plan and why or why not you might want to consider certain things. This was a great guide for me since prior to this delivery I didn't give much thought to writing out a Birth Plan. (Or you might like to call it a Birth Preference since giving birth has a way of doing its own thing!)

The idea behind a birth plan is to put your desires on paper for a nurse or doctor to have readily available during your labor and delivery. It's also helpful to have pertinent information such as your D.O.B., estimated due date, allergies, etc. listed so that if you are not feeling well or in pain (very likely!), the nurses can easily access that information without having to bother you.

Throughout this pregnancy as various topics regarding birth have come up, I have discussed them with my husband. These aren't decisions I want to make on my own, but they are decisions that need to be made. For example, if you're having a son, will you circumcise? Do you want your baby to have the Hepatitis B shots at birth? What about the Vitamin K shot? There are so many things that are done routinely at hospitals that it's worth your time to think through and research each option because you don't have to have everything done.

After I came up with a Birth Plan rough draft, I made sure to go over it with my OB. I trust his judgment and I was able to discuss the pros and cons of various decisions but with him leaving the final decision up to my husband and me.

I also love that in Unbound Birth Jenny shares her three birth stories. All of them were drug free, in a hospital, with a doula, her husband and her obstetrician. While I don't yet know the outcome of this birth I can say that that is how I hope this labor and delivery turns out for me!

She also gives suggestions for recommended reading, resources on why doulas are so helpful and tips for dealing with pain during childbirth. If you are preparing for birth then it'd be worth your time to check out Unbound Birth. It can be purchased here for as low as $2.99. Visit www.unboundbirth.com for more tips and articles on pregnancy and childbirth.

5 Tips for Dealing with Swelling During Pregnancy

Written by Kim, Contributing Writer
If you are anything like me, you probably look at the “it’s all in my belly” pregnant women and think (as you stare down at your non-existent ankles) how is that even possible? I can remember coming home from work every day toward the end of my pregnancy and barely being able to bend my feet!

Even though it is common to experience some swelling during your pregnancy, you shouldn’t have to suffer through it without remedy. The swelling in your extremities during pregnancy is caused by the pressure your growing uterus puts on your veins, most notably the vena cava, slowing the return of blood from your extremities. This causes the blood to pool and forces fluid into your hands, feet and ankles. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help relieve the swelling and keep your ankles to a (somewhat) existent state.

Be Conscious of Your Positions
It may come as second nature, and you probably don’t even realize you are doing it, but don’t cross your legs or ankles while sitting. Doing so will make it even more difficult for the blood to return back from your legs, increasing the amount of swelling. Also, try lying on your left side when resting.
The vena cava is located on your right side, so lying on the opposite side will help relieve some of the additional pressure being put on the vena cava by your uterus. For me, the left side just felt better throughout my pregnancy – I suppose it was my body’s way of saying, “yes, this is helping!”

Put Those Feet Up
I think the saying “take a load off” must have come from a pregnant woman. Truth is, especially in the third trimester, we are carrying around a decent amount of weight – weight that our body is not used to supporting. This adds to the stress on our legs and ankles and can cause swelling and stiffness.
As often as you can, put your feet up. This will help lessen the amount of fluid in your feet and ankles by making it easier for the blood to circulate back up from your legs.  I worked my entire pregnancy, up until the week before delivery. In my office, I took an extra small trash bin, flipped it upside down and brought a small blanket to make it soft to rest my feet on.

Stretch and Exercise Regularly
Being active during your pregnancy is good all around – it can help to make labor and delivery easier, shorten recovery time after delivery and maintain good circulation. If you weren’t running 5 miles a day before your pregnancy, now is no time to start – but you can do some easier exercises like walking or swimming (BONUS: going in a pool can help to temporarily reduce swelling!).
If you’re in an office all day for work, stretch your legs throughout the day and try to take a short walk. It can be hard to remember, especially if you’re really busy, but try to set some time aside every day. In the last two months of my pregnancy, I scheduled 10 minutes on my calendar every morning and every afternoon so I would make sure I took two walks around the building every day.

Break out the Granny Stockings
Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, and there are such amazing maternity clothes out there, but I hate to break it to you – waist-high compression stockings are a life saver. Okay, so they are not attractive, flattering or cute but they work.
By keeping a tight, yet tolerable compression on your legs, ankles, and feet these stockings will minimize swelling by not allowing the blood to pool at your feet. Put them on first thing in the morning (maybe even before you get out of bed if your swelling is as bad as mine was!) to avoid letting the blood start to pool.

Drink Water
I know it sounds counterproductive – if you are retaining water why should you drink more, right? Well, drinking more water will send a signal to your body to release extra fluids, so the more water you drink, the more fluids are released.
Drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day to help counteract swelling and limit your intake of sodium as it contributes to fluid retention. I’m not much of a water drinker, so I would fill up my 16 oz. water bottle in the morning and drink the entire thing on my way to work. I’d then make sure to drink another full bottle before lunch, one after lunch and one on my way home. That way I reached by 64 oz. every day (if not more).
Hang in there, swelling can definitely be a pain but even just one or two of the tips above can help alleviate some discomfort. Remember, if you have any pain or tenderness in your leg or notice uneven, excessive or sudden swelling call your doctor or midwife as this may be a more serious condition.

Making Babies

Now that's a catchy title isn't it? But don't worry! This post is very family friendly (and pro-family at that!) and this material is all about helping Momma be healthy before, during and after pregnancy. I couldn't think of a better pregnancy resource to share with you in my Healthy Pregnancy Series than the Making Babies Book and DVD set from the Bulk Herb Store.

Shoshanna Easling is the gorgeous Momma who started the Bulk Herb Store and she has spent countless hours compiling so much great information that will help you and your little one to be healthy during your pregnancy. She put all of that information into one amazing book and DVD set called Making Babies.

Making Babies: The Book

The Making Babies Book has been a resource for me about a year now and I have utilized the recipes numerous times throughout this pregnancy. Some of my favorite recipes come from this book! I loved adding these delicious recipes to my meal planning schedule.

The photography in this book is beautiful and includes pictures of the prepared recipes, pictures of Shoshanna throughout her pregnancy and pictures of her and her sweet baby after she was born.

In addition to the recipes, there is a lot of other helpful information about what specific foods or herbs are good for. The Making Babies book has been a good resource for me as various issues have cropped up during this pregnancy.

The recipes are not limited to just things you can eat though! Shoshanna's recipes and suggestions deal with anything from foods that help you get pregnant, how to help conceive a boy or a girl, how to deal with the morning sickness, pregnancy cramps, butters for stretch marks, nursing issues and more! (Preview a Making Babies recipe here.)

The book covers information that is in the Making Babies DVDs volumes 1,2 and 3, but is a must have in addition to the DVDs because it provides a written reference for all your recipes. "It is packed with research about fertility, conception, morning sickness, pregnancy, birth, nursing, postpartum issues, losing weight, and more."

This book would make an awesome present for a newly pregnant Momma or even for yourself if you and your husband are trying to start a family or looking to grow your family.

I have tried A LOT of the recipes in this book! Some of my favorites are: Bacon Sandwiches, Chiller for UTIs, Cracker Jacks Unboxed, Rhubarb Crisp, Florentine Omelet and more!

Making Babies: The DVD Series

Shoshanna is a down to earth, energetic Momma who is simply showing you in her DVDs what she does to help build a healthy baby. I enjoyed watching her DVDs as they show step-by-step instructions on how to make herbal concoctions and healthy recipes. It's a great resource, especially if you are new to herbals or making recipes from scratch. She truly inspires you to do your best to eat well for you and your baby!
  • Making Babies Volume 1 addresses fertility, conception, morning sickness and pregnancy. (Run time: 2 hr 30 min.)
  • Making Babies Volume 2 addresses healthy recipes, remedies, herb concoctions, and information about the second and third trimesters, exercises, birth prep, birth and more. (Run time: 2 hr 15 min.)
  • Making Babies Volume 3 provides recipes, remedies, herb concoctions but also information about birth, nursing, postpartum, losing weight and getting in shape. (Run time 2 hr 20 min.)

As you can tell by the length of the DVD series, Shoshanna has put much time and effort into this great resource!
If you want to take a more in-depth peek at Making Babies, check out the trailer below:

Thanks for joining me in this pregnancy series as I am pregnant with baby #4. Psalm 127:3 tells us that "Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from Him." I'm so thankful that Shoshanna has invested her time into making such a great series that truly ministers to the physical demands of a pregnant Momma and her growing baby.
