It’s something that you and the family have been thinking about for many years, and now you’ve decided to take the plunge and turn your dreams into reality.
That’s great news. Now all you need to do is find a
contractor to do the work for you. But, that’s not as straightforward as it
sounds. It’s not just a case of flipping through the yellow pages and picking
one out. Nor is it as simple as jumping on Google and deciding on using the
company that appears first in the results.
There are lots of things that you need to be aware of when
it comes to choosing the right home remodeling contractor. You will want an
experienced contractor to carry out the work, such as the professionals over at
cqchome.com, who have many years’
experience in home remodeling.
Below we will discuss some of the most important things when
you make your decision about who you will hire.
Have a realistic plan of what you want to
achieve
Before you even start thinking about getting in touch with
contractors, it is vital that you have a viable and realistic plan of what work
you want done to your home. Are you looking for a complete remodeling of the
entire property, or are you just going for a new kitchen or bathroom. If you
have a small home,
then accept that turning it into a 6 bedroom mansion is not going to be a
realistic option.
You need to have a realistic idea about what you want done
to your property, so that when you do start getting in touch with contractors,
they will be a much better position to give you a more accurate quote for the
costs and the time needed to complete such work.
What experience do they have?
You will want to make sure that whoever you hire to do the
work is more than capable of undertaking the project. Don’t be afraid to ask
about their experience when getting in touch with various remodeling companies.
Ask them about previous work they have done, ask for references and also check
their online reviews.
If they have a Google or Facebook Business page, then you can check
that for reviews and testimonials from previous clients. There are also
independent review websites that you might be able to use to see what people
have to say about them.
Check their credentials
One you’ve been able to narrow down a list of potential
contractors, it is a good idea to check their certification and licensing. The
work you want undertaken on your home may require specific licenses, so you
will want to make sure that the contractor has these.
Another thing you should check is the liability insurance of
the contractor. You want to make sure that if any major damage occurs in your
home during the work, then you will be covered by their insurance.
Ask friends or family for recommendations
One of the best methods of promotion for any type of
business is by word of mouth. Check with any of your friends or family members
who may have previously had renovation work done. They may have worked with a
contractor who provided an excellent service and are more than happy to
recommend them to you. Equally, they may have worked with a company that
delivered very poor results, and will advise you against using them.
Shop around – don’t go with the first quote you
get
By now you should have a list of the final potential
contractors that you may work with. Get in touch with each of them, explaining
the work that you want done in your house, and ask them for a quote.
Sometimes the contractor may want to come and see your home first before giving
a quote. Other times they may be more than happy to provide you with a quote
over the phone.
What you should do concerning getting quotes is to ask them
to email you their quote. It is always good to have a solid reference to the
quote you were given, rather than relying on what you were told over the
telephone.
Once you have received the various quotes from the different
contractors under consideration, you need to sit down and carefully go through
each of them. Pay attention to the small details such as the time needed to complete
the work, as well as the actual price.
Also, you need to remember that going with the lowest quote
will not always be the best decision. Most of the quotes should be fairly
similar to each other, so if you see that one quote is much lower than the
others, this should be something to be wary of.
