Time4Writing On-line Curriculum Review

Time4Writing is a One-On-One on-line Writing Course for your child and is taught by a certified teacher. (You can click here to read their bios). This eight-week course retails for $99 and allows your child access to his assignments at any time and gives him the flexibility to complete them at his own pace.

Writing courses are offered for Elementary, Middle School and High School levels. "Students work through the interactive lessons and writing assignments at their own pace. Time4Writing also provides many free writing resources.

We reviewed the Elementary Sentences Class which teaches students to write and revise their own complete and interesting sentences. They also learn about the four sentence types as well subject-verb agreement. Within the Elementary level you can choose from the following classes: Grammar, Sentence Structure, Paragraph Writing and Essay Writing.

How We Used the Program

I added Time4Writing to our son's on-line job chart so that we would be reminded to get it done and so that he could earn points on his job chart since it is extra curriculum and summer time. :)

The program should be completed several days out of week and a mid-course report is sent to let the parent know where your child is at in the course. (In fact, I just got our mid-course report and we are right on track--yippee!) The lessons involve either a game, a quiz, a video or an actual submission to your child's teacher so it's easy to complete several lessons at once. However, once a writing assignment has been submitted you must wait for the teacher's feedback before your child can move on to the next lesson.

What I Thought

I love that our son receives very specific lessons to complete and then receives feedback on those lessons from a certified writing teacher.

Writing is such a necessary skill to have because it helps our children develop critical thinking skills as well as the ability to express thoughts in a clear, concise and understandable way.

I appreciate having a real teacher on the other side of the computer that can give feedback to our son. It also helps to encourage him when he wants to put off an assignment to know that his teacher's going to wonder where he is if he doesn't complete his assignments. :)

If I have questions or concerns it is easy to contact our son's teacher, Ms. Nicole via email. I always receive a prompt reply and we always get our assignments back promptly as well. (For safety reasons teachers will correspond with students only through the Time4Writing campus although parents are free to correspond via email with the teacher.)

At $99 for the eight-week course it works out to $12.50 a week. That seems a little expensive to me, at least for the level we are completing. However, for an older student who is tackling more challenging writing issues I would think this is reasonable. (To get a good assessment about that click on the TOS button at the bottom of this post to see what other Moms think about varying levels. ) It might be nice if there was a tiered pricing system based on either the Elementary, Middle School or High School level.

Overall though I definitely give this program a thumbs up.
