Preserving the Season's Bounty: Cherries

In spite of the fact that we just welcomed a new baby into our home, my husband still took care of preserving cherries for our family this year (Bless his heart!) I had just gotten home from the hospital so he did all of the work this year. Rather than pick the cherries ourselves, we got them from the local orchard's market and it was the same price as if we'd picked them ourselves. I was thankful that it wasn't more! In fact, we were able to get some "seconds" that way which was a considerable savings. ("Seconds" are cherries that still taste fine but don't look quite as pretty.)

This is the cherry pitter we use.
It does 4 cherries at a time and is easy for the kids to use as well.

Last year we canned and froze cherries but we still have some of the canned cherries left so my husband dehydrated a small batch but froze the rest for smoothies. Most nights we have a smoothie as a bedtime snack and my husband is the expert smoothie maker around here. They are packed with vitamins and antioxidants since all he uses is a little water, honey and frozen fruit that we have preserved over the past year.

What do you do with cherries?
