Additional Resources and Activities
I'd also highly recommend that you have a copy of Mysteries and Marvels of Nature. This is a book our children have enjoyed time and time again and it gives lots of facts about many different animals. It is also internet linked if you care to further your study about a particular animal. We looked up different kinds of penguins in this book and read about them.
Another incredible resource that I think every family should have is the Planet Earth DVD series. Be prepared to be blown away by the incredible places and animals on our planet that most likely, you've never seen before. This has been a fantastic all around resource for our family and is wonderful to pull out when we want to focus on a particular region or animal. There is very, very minimal reference to evolution.
A fun game was having the kids pretend they were Emperor Penguin Fathers taking care of their eggs. They put hardboiled eggs on top of their feet and tried waddling like a penguin. It was pretty comical!
For Songs and Poems, a great resource is Preschool Express. I also found one I liked from Songs 4 Teachers.
I made a page entitled Penguin Research and it's a fill-in-the-blank style research paper for young children. Here's a free printable for you to use:
I also had our son dictate to me whatever he wanted to tell me he had learned about penguins and I typed it up as he dictated it to me. Then we made a penguin out of construction paper and he glued his dictation on the inside flap. We love how it turned out!
We were also able to take a trip to our local zoo where they have several species of penguins. It was a fun way to end our unit on penguins.
