Available from Tommy Nelson, the new devotional book for kids called Jesus Today: Devotions for Kids is now available. This devotional is a book about the hope that is offered to us through Jesus. The author, Sarah Young, wrote these devotionals from her own personal reflections from her daily quiet time of Bible reading, praying and writing in prayer journals.

While Sarah does write to the child as if Jesus is speaking to them, she is careful to mention that nothing she writes is inspired (like the Bible is). When sharing these devotionals with our children I want there to be a definite understanding that these are not the actual words of Christ. So, for me personally, to be sure of that, I do change the wording a bit to make it clear it is not what Jesus is actually saying. However, I think that the messages that are communicated through the devotional are based on Scripture and very encouraging. They have blessed me over and over again especially as my heart breaks from trials right now.

Also, the Scripture verses are printed opposite each devotional making it easier for the child to read them since younger ones will have a hard time looking the verses up in their Bible. That being said, I think you need to be very clear with your child what is the actual devotional part and what is the Scripture. For some, this may be too much of a hassle. For others, it may not be an issue. The whole point of this devotional though is to help kids grow in their personal relationship in Christ.

There are also pages devoted to quotes from Christians throughout history and accompanying Bible verses.

The author states that "the devotions...are meant to be read slowly, preferably in a quiet place--with your Bible open." It is, by no means, meant to replace the Word of God in an individual's life. "Sarah is biblically conservative in her faith and reformed in her doctrine. She earned a master's degree in biblical studies and counseling from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis." She prays daily for the readers of all her books. (How sweet!)
