Pregnancy Tea

Growing a baby is a big job and if you're not getting enough nutrients and vitamins, your baby may not suffer because he'll take what he needs from your body. However, your body will pay the price, so do the best you can to make sure you're getting enough vitamins and minerals from natural sources rather than synthetic ones.

One of the ways to do this is to utilize organic herbs. I recently started making my own pregnancy tea once I found out my iron was low (I'll have another post on ways to naturally boost your iron without supplements).

My cousin is training to become a doula and she passed this recipe on to me from her mid-wife. Feel free to adjust the amounts to suit your own taste!

Pregnancy Tea

1/2 c. Red Raspberry (uterine tonic) (**Some studies have shown red raspberry leaf to cause miscarriages if started during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy)
1/2 c. Nettle (Kidney support; boosts iron levels)
1/3 c. Alfalfa (calcium; please do not use if you have a family history of lupus)
1/3 c. Rose hips or Hibiscus (Vitamin C)
1/3 c. Red Clover (multi-vitamin)
1/3 c. Spearmint (taste and digestion)

Boil 2 quarts of water and poor over herbs. Let steep up to 12 hours (I boil my water in a pan, add the herbs and then let it steep on the stove over night. After that I refrigerate the tea). Add honey to taste. You can drink this hot or cold or 1/2 and 1/2 with juice. It's a little strong for my taste so I like to mix it with a little cranberry juice which also helps support urinary tract health.

If you're interested in ordering herbs, the cheapest place that I found was More Than Alive.

**I received this recipe from my doula who received it from her midwife. Please be sure to do your own research on these herbs and then make the decision as to whether or not they are right for you and your baby.
