Proverbs 10 is literally a list of thirty-two individual Proverbs penned by the book's scribe, Solomon. While none of them in this chapter dealt specifically with being a wife, there are several proverbs that are applicable to our journey towards strengthening our marriage. Here are my favorites:
- "The godly are showered with blessings" (verse 6)
- "The wise are glad to be instructed" (verse 8)
- "People with integrity have firm footing, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall." (verse 9)
- "The words of the godly lead to life" (verse 11)
- "Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love covers all offenses." (verse 12)
- "Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding. (verse 13)
- "People who accept correction are on the pathway to life." (verse 17)
- "The godly give good advice" (verse 21)
- "The hopes of the godly result in happiness." (verse 28)
- "The Lord protects the upright" (verse 29)
- "The godly person gives wise advice." (verse 31)
- "The godly speak words that are helpful." (verse 32)
After taking the time to write down each proverb that I felt could be applied to my role as a wife, I noticed a trend in several of the verses. They all dealt with the speech of the godly.
When I am patterning my life after Christ's example, my speech will be life-giving to my husband ("The words of the godly lead to life") (verse 11)
When I choose love, I will hold my tongue and pray instead ("Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love covers all offenses.") (verse 12)
The words I speak (and how I say them) to my husband will reveal whether or not I am filling my life with wisdom "Wise words come from the lips of people with understanding. (verse 13)
When I am Spirit-led, the counsel I offer my husband is invaluable ("The godly give good advice" (verse 21)
When I am filling my life with God's words, they will overflow into the conversations I have with my husband ("The godly person gives wise advice." (verse 31)
When I share wisdom that I have first applied to my own life, then I know the words I speak to my husband will be helpful to him. "The godly speak words that are helpful." (verse 32)
We cannot live godly lives apart from spending time in God's Word on a regular basis. His Word needs to be hidden in our heart, displayed in our home, and by our bedside. A successful day is one that is book-ended with God's Word: It is in our heart and before our eyes when we wake up and it's in our thoughts when we lay our heads down to rest at night.
Today's Challenge is this: Choose to Fill Your Life with God's Word so You Will Be a Wise Counselor to Your Husband.
I am praying that you and I will be women of God's Word who can offer life-giving words to our husbands. Pressing on in our pursuit of a stronger marriage!
