Apologia's Self-Paced Courses Review

It's hard to believe we're into the second half of our school year already. Time has a way of flying by and I feel like most days it's hard to keep up with everything. Because of that, I'm so grateful to not have to give much thought at all to my older two children's science courses. My 10th grader is currently using Apologia's Chemistry from Apologia and my 8th grader is using General Science

We have access to the self-paced science courses for them and one of the things that my children love most is that even if we can't complete an experiment at home, they can at least watch the demonstration done in the Apologia lab. Additionally, the video clips that provide extra information about particular topics are especially interesting. Sometimes my daughter will be enjoying the lessons so much she comes to me and asks if she can do more. Of course I say yes. 😊 Who wants to tell their child no when they are enjoying learning so much?

And while I am happy to be involved as much as possible in my children's education, as a mom of six, I definitely need help carrying the weight of these upper level science courses. The options we found with Apologia were an answer to prayer, especially with the self-paced options that are now available for the middle school and high school science courses. I think of all the options available, the self-paced one is my favorite.

General Overview

We have used Apologia for years. Not only for science, but also for BibleGovernment (best course, ever!) writing, and reading. So, by this point, we are quite familiar with this curriculum company.

Everything with Apologia is done well and is very thorough which is why we chose to use them for our son's High School Chemistry course and our daughter's General Science course. We felt they were the best options to give them a well-rounded, well-prepared middle school and high school experience that would also prepare them for college if they choose to go.

Challenging science concepts in these courses are presented in a conversational tone yet include thought-provoking experiments designed to help students learn, develop self-checking skills and eventually master difficult concepts before progressing.

Who Are These Courses For?

Let's take a closer look at the Chemistry course first. Apologia's Chemistry is designed to help high school students who have completed pre-algebra and are proficient in algebra. I know that homeschooling high schoolers can seem daunting, but Apologia has completely taken the fear out of covering these high school science courses. With the incredible array of options you truly can get a course that fits well with your child's learning style.

I am so relieved to know that I have resources available for my child that will help him to succeed and gain a solid science education "even though we're homeschooling." Honestly, in this day and age, there are so many options available to homeschoolers. It's just a matter of finding what's the best fit for your child. I love that we have the self-paced science courses that really fill in every aspect of what my children need for their science credits.

This "award-winning 3rd edition high school chemistry course offers more in-depth discussions and explanations of concepts, a more user-friendly flow of topics, as well as biographical sketches of Christian scientists who have made a difference in the field while giving the glory to God. This course provides a rigorous foundation in chemistry in order to prepare your student for college-level studies."

And here's a brief look at the General Science course. As the name implies, General Science is designed to give your child an excellent overview of numerous facets of science. The course starts off by teaching about many great scientists in past history who were inspired to study the world around them simply so they could know more about the God who created it. The course ends with introductions to modern-day scientists who encourage your child to study the world around them in order that they may better know their Creator.

"Exploring Creation with General Science, 3rd Edition, is specifically designed to walk with your middle school student transitioning from homeschool elementary courses as he or she rises up to meet his or her greater abilities and developing maturity."

What are the Self-Paced Courses Like?

Apologia’s self-paced homeschool classes are the same version of the award-winning Apologia Science courses, but in a self-paced portal. The self-paced versions offer:

  • Full online digital version of the textbook (visual learners!)
  • Audio narration of the course textbook (auditory learners!)
  • The Video Instruction course material, featuring Sherri Seligson as the instructor, integrated into the daily assignments
  • Easy-to-do at-home experiments (hands-on learners!)
  • On Your Own and Study Guide materials
  • Unique tests complete with automatic grading (hallelujah!)
  • Desktop and mobile access (learn on the go if you need to!)
  • Flexibility to learn at a pace that’s best for your student (no pressure!)

I know that many parents were suddenly faced with the decision to homeschool this year and I understand that it can feel overwhelming, especially if you have a child needing to complete higher level science courses. Truly, Apologia has not only made it possible to do, but also ensures that your child gets an excellent education, not a mediocre one.

If you'd like to learn more about the self-paced option, this video is less than 5 minutes and will give you a general overview of the program.

You can also follow this link to visit the Apologia  website. Under online learning, you can see the selection of self-paced courses and if you click "learn more" you can see a quick demo.
