How to Do a Relational Heart Check

Proverbs 23:27-28 "A prostitute is a deep pit; an adulterous woman is treacherous. She hides and waits like a robber, looking for another victim who will be unfaithful to his wife."

It's easy to read over this verse quickly because I have deceived myself into thinking it can't be talking about me. In fact, I usually think of a woman who is hanging out on a corner in the rough part of town or perhaps the woman on the front of a magazine.

But I would be wise to check my own heart to make sure it has not strayed from my husband.

We should ask ourselves:

Are there any unbiblical relationships I have established that need to be severed? Keep in mind, they may be "only" emotional in nature, but even those kinds of relationships can drain a marriage dry. The dream world of living with someone else will always look and seem better than your real life because it is clouded with the wishes and desires you have projected onto it.

Am I setting my gaze on things that I shouldn't? Perhaps you allow yourself a secret "eye candy" board on Pinterest. (I think just the fact that it is called "eye candy" is covering the true destructive nature that it is.) Comparing our husbands who faithfully work to provide for our families to a dude that works out at the gym 8 hours a day is totally not fair. (And, mercy, don't compare me to someone that works out that long either!)

Is my body language and dress specifically chosen to draw the attention of a man other than my husband? If so, we need to prayerfully consider some serious wardrobe changes.

I'm sorry to say, friend, that while many in the world find it permissible, normal or what everybody does, anytime my heart strays from my husband and towards another man (whether he be real, in a movie or in a book) I am not being faithful to my husband.

The truth of the matter is, my heart mind and body need to be focused on loving and serving the man I am blessed to call my husband. He is my ministry and I am his helper.

Today's Challenge is a Prayer:

God, please help me to keep my mind, heart and body only for my husband and please help him to be faithful to me with his heart, mind and body. Amen.

Join me tomorrow as we study Proverbs chapter 23. Just getting started on the series? Catch up with all the posts on my landing page between now and October 31.

This is awesome!! I just stumbled upon this post from a group on Facebook we obviously share. I am going to go back and take the time to read your other posts! I am trying to strengthen my marriage and am seeking help from God and my bible. Thank you for this. I love the scripture you posted opening this post but it is actually Proverbs 23: 27-28 not 22. I am not meaning to correct you I just didn't want anyone to be frantically searching for this scripture in chapter 22. Your word is very encouraging!

Thank you so much for your encouraging words Breanna. I really appreciate it! I do hope you find the rest of the series to be helpful. It has been such a blessing to me to study Proverbs in hopes of strengthening my own marriage. And yes, thank you letting me know that. I didn't realize it in this post. When I was preparing for tomorrow I realized I did the wrong chapter on the wrong day, but didn't even think to check today's post so I will go fix that. I appreciate you letting me know. :)

Hugs,
Becky
