Blazing the trail in Christian adventure movies, Beyond the Mask is the first of it's kind in the Christian film industry.

It masterfully weaves the hope of the gospel into a Christian adventure story that brings history to life while celebrating true love, grace and redemption.

Set in the tumult of the young, American nation declaring it's independence from Great Britain, Beyond the Mask presents the desperation we all face when trying to find our identity in anything other than Christ.

The story line is about a young man who tries to run from his past by taking on a new identity, but eventually realizes that no matter how noble his new life is, it can never make his past right.

His struggle is one that all of us can relate to.

It is not until we receive freedom in Christ that we are released from the bondage and fear of living behind the mask of who we pretend to be.

What Beyond the Mask Means to Me

This film was directed and produced by cousins, Aaron and Chad Burns. It is the fruition of  two, Christian, homeschooling families who have a passion to help others find their hope and identity in Christ.

My husband and I attend church with Aaron, the producer, and several of his family members. His family has been a tremendous blessing to us over the years and I consider the wisdom I have gained from his mom, in particular, invaluable in my life as a young, homeschooling mother.

Working with their family in this film was a mentoring process in and of itself. Their example of humility, love, service and sacrifice on and off set were like nothing else I had ever personally seen before and will forever be etched upon me. The humility and teamwork of these two families was astounding.

One of the things that impacted me the most was seeing each individual family member use the talents that God has given them to make this film come together.

Sons and daughters from both families came together to create incredible sets for various scenes, daughters sewed astounding period costumes, other daughters used their photography skills to chronicle the movie, some sons made necessary prop explosives and the list goes on and on.

The parents of both families whole-heartedly served in numerous aspects allowing this film to be come together in a God-honoring way. The support they gave their adult children is an incredible example of encouraging your children, no matter what age, to pursue the God-given talents they have and to use them for His glory.

But don't let all this talk of "homeschooling, Christian families supporting the dreams of their children" dub you into believing this is a backyard production.

This movie is the real deal.

When I watched this movie, I was riveted, but you don't have to take my word for it. The professional line up will speak volumes all by itself.

Paul McCusker (Adventures in Odyssey) did a fabulous job as the main screenwriter with Stephen Kendrick (Flywheel, Facing the Giants, Fireproof, Courageous) assisting and writing several key scenes. The Kendricks brothers insight and feedback along the way was invaluable.

Leading actors, Andrew Cheney (Seasons of Gray (2013), Rebels of the Book: The Final Word) (2012) and Kara Killmer (If I Can Dream (2010), Chicago Fire) (2012) were phenomenal as were many other actors such as John Rhys-Davies, perhaps best known in recent years for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I think you will be incredibly impressed with the excellence of this film and it will leave you hungry for more God-honoring productions of this caliber. Personally, I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for them to announce their next film!

An "Extra" Blessing

My precious children, husband, and I all were blessed with the opportunity of being extras in this film. The experiences we had on and off set are treasured memories that we will never forget. We are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of an adventure film that will point others all over the world to Christ.

Our family had a small part in this movie, but the pictures and memories we have are a huge gifts to us.

One of our sons in Charlotte's arms (Kara Killmer)

Filming with this little guy was just way too much fun! God's grace was completely evident this particular night because he had to film until 1 in the morning in 40 degree weather. (Don't worry, this Momma kept her little guy bundled warm in between shoots, but what a trooper he was! All I can say is, many, many prayers were lifted up that night for filming and God's grace was exceedingly abundant!

Our daughter enjoying her time with William (Andrew Cheney) and Charlotte (Kara Killmer) (who was off set of course)

Two of our children and I, along with a sweet little girl from church, did a quick rescue scene

Our family. And yes, I am 3 weeks from my due date with our 9 lb 5 oz baby boy in this picture. I guess they probably didn't make Colonial maternity clothes now did they? :)

Beyond the Mask is scheduled to release for a limited time in theaters across the nation June 5, 2015.

My prayer is that God will use this film to encourage Christians all over the world to boldly live the calling that God has placed on their life and that those who do not yet know Christ would be overwhelmed by His love and mercy and would surrender their life to Him. The new identity we find in Christ is more freeing than anything we will ever find in this world.

**The film is rated PG due to some mild thematic elements (what I might call intense scenes that may be a little frightening for little ones). I took our five year old to see it because he is in it, but you may want to consider children 7 and up just until you have an opportunity to personally view it.
