Homemade Natural Bug Spray

I don't know why I didn't do this years ago but maybe it took some really horrible little black flies that are new to our area to make me finally find a safe bug repellent for our kids that was easy to apply and didn't leave a lingering bug repellent odor.

I had already long since given up traditional bug sprays because of the ingredients in them and had since found this natural bug balm for our kids.

The only trouble is, I can't spray it on them and the application process times four is more than I care to do every time my kids want to be out doors (which is pretty much all of the time when the weather is good). Plus, even though the bug balm is effective, it has a strong smell to it that I don't care to smell all day long after it is applied. (This brand does make a spray variety but it's almost $12 for 4 oz and I'm pretty sure we'd go through that in nothing flat.)
All that led me to turn to my Modern Essentials Oil book to see if there were any easy, yet effective options for a natural bug repellent. Several essential oils were recommended and I decided to go with a blend of Lavender, TerraShield, lemongrass and peppermint.

I combined 5 drops of lavender, 20 drops of lemongrass, 30 drops of TerraShield and 3 drops of peppermint in two cups of water. This solution smells so good and when we use it, no one gets any bug bites (including mosquitos)!

To make application easier, I bought this fabulous UV Protected Glass Spray Bottle off of Amazon. It is an amber, glass spray bottle so it is safe for essential oils and what's really cool is that it also has UV protection to protect my oils from breaking down from ultraviolet light.

I keep our essential oil spray bottle right by the back door on the windowsill so that it's easy to remember and it's easy to apply. I'm so glad I finally found a safe and easy way to keep the bugs off our kids!

Update: since making this spray, the mosquitos have gotten out.of.control in our area and I'm going to try adding a new oil called patchouli to keep them more at bay.

What natural remedies do you use to keep the bugs at bay?

Hey Becky,

You said this works for black flies.....how does it work for mosquitos? I need to find something for us because the kind we use on the kids now, ick! Especially when I am pregnant, I would literally be putting it on and gagging the whole time. LOL
